Abstract
Although hepatic hemangioma is a very rare tumor. The incidence is highest in the neonatal and infant stage of development. When this tumor is in a rapid growth phase, it becomes very dangerous. Some of the main causes of death are: A) arteriovenous fistula with congestive heart failure, B) necrosis and rupture with hemorrhage and C) thrombocytopenia with hemolysis, and hemorrhage,
The author did a right hepatic lobectomy on one case of neonatal giant hepatic hemangioma of the right lobe of the liver, in a 15 day old boy and the following is a summary of this and d review of the literature.
1. Although the literature reports spontaneous remission of cases like the above, the author thinks of the lobectomy of the right lobe of the liver as prevention of possible fatal complications
2. Spontaneous remission, involution secondary to radiation, or corticosteroid therapy has been reported but the author feels that if there are no contraindications to the use of surgery that the morbidity could be shortened and the absolute knowledge of total cure can be best achieved in the hands of an excellent surgeon by the use of surgery.
3. The literature indicates that in patients undergoing right hepatic lobectomy below the age of 12 months that it is not essential to the surgical procedure to do a thoracotomy and the morbidity is definitely lessened.
